Rick Perry downplays debate meltdown

Infamous debate gaffes

  • 1976: Gerald Ford baffles audiences as he says: "There is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe." The gaffe dogged his losing campaign.
  • 1988: As Dan Quayle compares himself with JFK, Senator Lloyd Bentsen witheringly says: "Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy."
  • 1988: Michael Dukakis' ratings plunged after a dispassionate answer on whether someone who killed his wife should be sentenced to death.
  • 1992: James Stockdale says: "Who am I? Why am I here?" as he opens a stumbling debate performance.
  • 1992: President George H W Bush draws criticism for glancing at his watch, apparently impatient for the evening to end.
  • 2000: Vice-President Al Gore was seen as rude for repeatedly sighing as Republican George W Bush responded to questions.
