Peyton Manning, Colts to part ways
The Indianapolis Colts, barring a last-minute shift, plan to announce Wednesday that they have released quarterback Peyton Manning, a person familiar with the situation said Tuesday evening.
Dialogue between Colts owner Jim Irsay and Manning was ongoing Tuesday but it was expected that the two would decide that the team and its longtime quarterback would part ways, said the person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the resolution was not yet official. The Colts were making tentative plans for an announcement Wednesday, the person said.
Once the move becomes official, it will make Manning, the only four-time most valuable player in NFL history, a free agent. He will be free to sign immediately with any NFL team.
The Washington Redskins appear to be among the teams most interested in trying to sign him. The move, first reported by ESPN, was widely expected. Manning missed all of last season after undergoing a series of neck surgeries. The Colts would have had to pay him a $28 million bonus if he remained on their roster Thursday.
