SAN FRANCISCO - His 113th pitch was a 90-m.p.h. inside fastball clobbered by Pablo Sandoval barely over the fence in left field. At that moment, it barely mattered to Cole Hamels that Saturday's game, a 2-1 Phillies win over the Giants, was over on the 114th pitch. Ryan Howard flipped Hamels the winning ball, and the lefthander snatched it out of the air in disgust.
"He looked like he was a little upset," Charlie Manuel said. "He wanted the shutout. But he got the complete game."
That qualifies as disappointment these days for the Phillies, a team worthy of just about any superlative right now. They came here to prove the Giants are merely another foe standing in the way of the ultimate goal, not a team that has penetrated an otherwise rock-solid confidence. Three straight impressive victories have done that. Nine straight wins overall have pushed the Phillies to 74 wins in 113 games, tying a franchise record established by the 1976 team. They go for the sweep of San Francisco on Sunday with the fourth ace, Roy Oswalt, making his return.
